Top 5 things I would like to see in Google Reader

by Sherif

So I’m a keen user of Google Reader, I use it almost every day for quite some time. Here is a list of things I put together that I think would defiantly improve the product:

1. Search

I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve ‘starred’ something then wanted to come back and find it!
Currently I have to scroll through all my starred items until I find it.

So whats my work-around? Firefox CTRL+F doesn’t work either, because the page is rendered to you in JavaScript. There is another thing I tried and works – but its annoying. It is using the ‘Expanded’ view’ of all the items, then using the Firefox Web developer extension, doing a right-click and saying ‘View Generated Source’, then searching that way.
So, I want to be able to search all my RSS feeds.

2. Mashups

Mashups Mashups Mashups, it must be the most commonly on the web for 2007. What I’m talking about is a simple cut-down version of Yahoo Pipes. I talked about Yahoo Pipes a while ago, and its basically a way of putting some logic into RSS feeds and doing things with them.

If Google were to implement a simpler feature like Yahoo Pipes that would be awesome. Some things I would like to do (just off the top of my head):
– Group my RSS feeds by topic. I may get 10 different feeds from different sources all talking about the same thing. So I could mash them up and have a look at them all together.
– Create a Mashup to tell me if I have had more than x number of feeds come though on the same topic, if I had reached that Limit – email me or alert me somehow

Not after something too complex. I’m thing more so something like a ‘query builder’ interface where I can say; ‘for all feeds containing words x/y/x then do something’. I guess all the cool functionlaity would come in with that ‘something’. Could be send an email, or alert me, or display a different type of RSS feed or whatever…

3. Playing Podcasts / Vodcasts in Google reader whilst still being able to continue reading my feeds.

One thing that Bugs me is that If I come across an RSS feed that I like that has an audio podcast or a video vodcast. I can always play this media through Google reader, so I hit play on the video or audio. Seconds later, I want to read my next Item. As soon as I do it would stop playing that item!

I know I should click on the item and view it in another window, but what I was thinking if it opened in a pop-up window in my Google Reader. A good example of this is the Gmail chat window. It would be cool to have something like that for any podcasts or video feeds.

4. Recommend Me Subscriptions

You know what I like to read, so do you think there is anything else you think I’d Like to know about?

They do this quite well through Google Search History, it recommends things to you based on your search history:

Google Web History

So something similar would be excellent.

5. More Stats

I love stats. Google has done a good Job thus far with Google Analytics, Google Trends, and Google Search History. Google Reader Trends was created many months ago, and has been really cool to view but it only keeps data for the last 30 days.
Google Reader Stats
Additionally, this should also be integrated into your menu, instead of being a ‘hidden page‘. So I have a clear ‘Stats’ link.
